This visit to China was centered around the themes semiconductors, the silk route (OBOR) and cooperation in technical Education and took place in Beijing and Wuhan.
For semiconductors the motivation of our trip is to give a courtesy call to the new shareholders of Ampleon and Nexperia. These two spinouts of NXP in Nijmegen have been acquired for more than 4 billion Euro. Vaut le voyage.
The silk route is the new rail connection between Wuhan and Europe, a tremendous opportunity for a logistics region like Gelderland.
Increasing Economic integration also leads to needs of strengthening the skills base, so cooperation at vocational and higher technical education becomes essential.
This was not our first visit. Gelderland has a long standing tradition of engaging with China. With our official relations with the provinces of Hubei, Shandong and Fujian we support companies and universities in enhancing their position in China. In China governmental support is essential in doping business, from protocolar support till the very tangible aspects such as business licenses and building permits.
Experiencing Chinese culture and economics strengthens the awareness of the enormous impact that this country has on the global economy and politics. The speed and scale of changes in China also enables to reflect on the changing position of Europe. For the economy of Gelderland China is an important partner as client, supplier and investment location. Having common challenges, Chinese appreciate our knowledge basis, especially at the Wageningen University.
The Industry in Gelderland and in China are linked together in global value chains. Gelderland is strong in the cross-overs of innovation, manufacturing and application. China is an emerging market and a manufacturing powerhouse. Education is essential in linking to attain common standards, implement corporate social responsability and smart Industry. China is a sophisticated society. Hence the shift from courtesy visits to practical engagement in projects demands substantial attention and engagement. The political partnership with a limited set of provinces is an asset. This asset helpt to build framework conditions to engage in cooperation in education. This will be a priority for the China programme in 2017 and 2018.
